Students planning to take this class may wish to bring a 20X handlens and a pair of binoculars with them to campus to enhance their observational powers.

Field laboratories and field trips involve significant walking - good health and good walking shoes are strongly advised.

Biographical Information:

Research Interests:

     Developmental Plant Morphology and Plant Anatomy.
     Emphasis on stem, leaf, and vascular components of the plant.
     Expert Systems.
 

BOT 630W Objectives:

To provide teachers with an intensive and broad experience with respect to knowledge of trees (Dendrology).  This experience will include identification, distribution, and utilization of native and introduced trees and their products.  Teachers will customize a MUDES CD and develop lesson plans for incorporation of it into their own individual curricula as an independent project during the course.  Please consult the  2003 Ohio Educational Department Science Benchmark and Indicators for your grade level(s) to begin contemplation of your project.

BOTANY 630W -- Advanced Dendrology for Teachers Topical Syllabus

 Meeting Times:

     Summer III                     Class will meet every day for the two week period beginning July 13 and ending July 24
     Lectures                          MTWRF   9 -10 AM,  MTWRF  1 - 2 PM        306 PSN
     Laboratories                  MTWRF 10 -12 AM,  MTWRF  2 - 5 PM        Field Studies Primarily on Oxford Campus
     Week End Field Trips  Two Field Trips to local Arboreta are scheduled for Saturday (July 18) and Sunday (July 19)

     2.  Miami University Dendrology Expert System CD   (Students will have access to Samsung Q1 Ulta Computers to run this Software and complete their projects)
