Book by Jeffrey Kimball wins national award

Jeffrey Kimball, professor of history at Miami University, has won a national award for his book The Vietnam War Files: Uncovering the Secret History of Nixon Era Strategy (Lawrence: University Press of Kansas, 2004).

He received the Arthur S. Link–Warren F. Kuehl Prize for Documentary Editing from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) January 8 during the 119th annual meeting of the American Historical Association (AHA) in Seattle.

The Link–Kuehl Prize recognizes and encourages analytical scholarly editing of documents, in appropriate published form, relevant to the history of American foreign relations, policy and diplomacy. The award of $1,000 is presented biannually odd years at the SHAFR luncheon at the AHA annual meeting.

Kimball’s book, released one year ago, excerpted more than 140 print documents and taped White House conversations, most of which were never before published.

The prize is awarded to published documentary works distinguished by the inclusion (in headnotes, footnotes, essays, etc.) of both appropriate historical background needed to establish the context of the documents and interpretive historical commentaries based on scholarly research.

The competition is open to the editor/author(s) of any published collection of documents that is devoted primarily to sources relating to the history of American foreign relations, policy and/or diplomacy; and that incorporates sufficient historical analysis and interpretation of those documents to constitute a contribution to knowledge and scholarship.
