Karen Schilling, chair and professor of psychology, has been appointed dean of Miami University's College of Arts and Science and will begin in her new role July 1.

Schilling, who came to Miami in 1975 as the first female faculty member in the psychology department, has been chair of the department since 1999. She served for five years as Miami's first university director of liberal education, overseeing implementation of the Miami Plan, and was also coordinator and then acting director of the women's studies program from 1985-1990. She has served on more than two dozen campus councils or committees.

While chair of psychology, extramural funding to department faculty grew from about $220,000 per year to about $1,650,000.

Her background is in clinical, developmental and gender issues and she has taught undergraduates as well as doctoral students simultaneously most semesters. She has sat on more than 100 graduate theses committees, comprehensive exams and dissertations. Schilling, in a letter to the nominating committee, expressed her consistent desire over her tenure here to improve institutional diversity.

“Karen has been a leader for many years, and I am delighted that she will now take over the important role as dean of the College of Arts and Science. Her knowledge of the university, energy and creativity will serve the entire college very well and I look forward to working with her,” said Provost Jeffrey Herbst.

She has chaired the Executive Board of the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology for two terms and serves on the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. Professional service includes work for the Association for General and Liberal Studies, Pew Charitable Trusts and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Schilling also has been active in the community, serving on the Talawanda Board of Education and working with the department’s Center for School-based Mental Health.
