Vogel receives Knox Teaching Award

Robert Vogel, professor of communications, received the E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award during Miami University's commencement ceremony Dec. 16.

The $3,000 award was established by E. Phillips Knox (Miami ‘68) to recognize creative, innovative and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level. Miami’s committee on the enhancement of learning and teaching selected Vogel for the honor. This is the 11th year the award has been presented.

“He has exemplified a creative passion for teaching, a real belief and adherence to the worth of a liberal education and a dedication to working with students and colleagues across all divisions of the university to promote an interdisciplinary perspective on learning,” said President Jim Garland, who presented the award.

Vogel joined Miami’s faculty in 1973 after receiving a doctorate in communication from Purdue University. He served as Miami’s first director of faculty development in learning technologies, from 1995 to 1998, and received the alumni Effective Educator Award in 1995. He also has worked for many years in the interdisciplinary Laws, Hall and Associates program and with the Miami Tribe in Oklahoma. Vogel is known for his enthusiasm and positive rapport with students.

He received an EDUCOM Award in 1992 for his work in creating an interactive videodisc on multicultural awareness. The video was broadcast on NBC’s “Nightly News” and received other national attention
