What Can I Do With a Major in Exercise Science?

The Exercise Science major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health degree and is designed to give you breadth and depth of study. It also allows you to individualize your degree program. With your adviser's approval, you can elect up to one-third of the 128 hours required for graduation.

The KNH Department offers several, new, specially equipped exercise science laboratories in support of the Exercise Science major. The exercise physiology laboratory includes treadmills, bicycle ergometers, carbon dioxide and oxygen analyzers, electrocardiographs, and blood analysis hardware. This and other state-of-the-art equipment is used in Exercise Science courses and majors gain skill in using this equipment and interpreting the data it provides. The motor behavior laboratory is equipped to support instruction and research on the learning and control of human movement. The lab is equipped with standard equipment such as a stability platform, rotary pursuit, and linear movement apparatus, as well as numerous devices designed to measure human movement (e.g., reaction and movement timers). Computers, force plateform and electromyographic equipment also provide for a number of applications. The motor behavior lab permits the learning of concepts related to human skill acquisition and movement control through "hands-on" experimentation.

Interests

Students who choose this major should have a strong interest in chemistry, physics, physiology and anatomy, for these subjects are foundational for the scientific analysis of exercise and sport performance, and health. Furthermore, they should enjoy working in laboratories. Not only are "labs" included in most of the required coursework, but also, careers in exercise science usually involve laboratory work.

Opportunities - Careers

Careers in exercise science have increased in recent years. In other words, many are new and there is reason to expect that still others will emerge in the future. Examples include research in universities, work in hospitals and corporate fitness programs, movement therapy and physical fitness assessment and enhancement. An Exercise Science major can also serve as a prelude to training for careers in sport medicine, physical therapy, public health and medicine.
