What Can I Do With a Major in Chinese, French, German, Latin, or Spanish Education?
The Foreign Language Education majors lead to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Upon satisfactory completion of the requirements, students are eligible to apply for licensure in French, German, Latin, or Spanish. Approved by the Ohio Department of Education, these programs prepare graduates to teach one of the aforementioned languages in grades K-12. Students are encouraged to seek a double major in Arts and Sciences in the language of their licensure program. During their undergraduate program, students with a foreign language education major (except Latin) are required to study abroad for a minimum of six weeks. All students will complete classroom observation in urban, suburban/rural classrooms. The semester long student teaching experience allows students to work closely with mentor teachers in grades K-8 and in grades 9-12. Student teachers eventually assume instructional responsibility for all courses.
Entering students must preference pre-major status in one of the foreign language education programs and later apply for admission to a cohort. Pre-majors become majors when they are accepted in a cohort, usually following one year of full-time study. Admission to cohorts is competitive with the number of admissions determined by the number of students the Department of Teacher Education can teach effectively.
Interests
Students who have an intense interest in languages combined with a desire to impact the lives of children in many ways, including the multicultural, find this an exciting major. The foreign language major must be willing to commit to the attainment of a high level of proficiency in communication, culture, comparisons, connections and the development of community, as stated in the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Ideally students will enter Miami University with language skills above the 202 level. Foreign Language majors are unique in that they become personally and closely involved with their language(s) and culture(s), thus blending personal and professional lives.
Opportunities - Careers
These majors and degree will prepare graduates for licensure in Ohio Schools in the foreign language multi-aged licensure area.
