What Can I Do With a Major in Sport Studies?
The Sport Studies major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health degree. This major program allows students who have a keen interest in sport to study it from a cross-disciplinary perspective which includes psychological, sociological and historical orientations and analysis. Through coursework in the major, students are asked to think, both in critical and self-reflexive ways, about how and why the "what is" came to be with regard to sport and leisure practices.
Interests
Students who are interested in the study of sport from psychological, sociological and historical perspectives might find the Sport Studies major especially attractive. Further, with the department's interdisciplinary focus, health-related, and physiologically related courses are also included in the curriculum. The courses within this major take a critical look at sport and leisure with particular emphases on how class, gender, and race interact with the sport experience as well as looking at sport within a societal context. In addition, the psychological aspects impacting on sport performance are also highlighted. Sport Studies majors may find it advantageous to combine the major with one of the many minors in the School of Business or in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Opportunities - Careers
Vocationally, the program is ideal for those who seek employment in the fields of sport marketing, management, communications, or coaching at either the professional or recreational levels. Within KNH, students might consider combining their major with Health Studies courses to prepare for work within private health and fitness centers or non-profit programs such as YMCA's, public recreation departments, or university recreation centers. Aside from research-related careers, there are increasing employment opportunities for persons in the organization and delivery of sport programs and services and sport businesses.
