What Can I Do With a Major in Engineering Management?

The objective of the engineering management program is to provide society with graduates who have a depth of knowledge in science, engineering, and an engineering technical specialty; a broad grounding in liberal education; and a strong understanding of business and management. These individuals will have the interdisciplinary foundation and viewpoint required to play leadership roles in defining and resolving the complex issues and problems that will confront the private and public sectors in the future. Three technical specialties are available: environmental engineering, manufacturing engineering, and paper science and engineering.

The importance of an "interdisciplinary" approach to education is increasingly recognized by industry in this era when products are becoming more and more "technical" in nature and customers and competitors more sophisticated. Engineering graduates are being called upon to become managers of businesses that produce technical products or utilize technical processes. It is widely understood that successful managers must have strong communication and interpersonal skills. They must interact with a very wide range of individuals having diverse backgrounds and interests. It is the aim of this program to develop such individuals.

The program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a major in Engineering Management.

Interests

This course of study is excellent for students who are interested in combining business and engineering courses; and in utilizing and developing their mathematical, science, and interpersonal skills to address technological problems in their larger organizational and societal contexts.

Opportunities - Careers

Graduates are qualified to fill operational positions in areas such as: production management, quality control, business planning, purchasing, and technical sales. Placement is excellent for these graduates.

Opportunities - Graduate/Professional School

Graduates may continue their education to obtain advanced degrees in business, science, or engineering as well as the law and medical professions.

Opportunities - Experiential

Students can gain valuable work experience and financial assistance by participating in the co-op program or in internship opportunities. The co-op program, which typically takes five years to complete, is highly recommended for students pursuing the Paper Science and Engineering specialty. The co-op and summer internship programs are optional for those completing the Manufacturing Engineering or Environmental Science specialties.
