Specific Information for Transfer Students

Advanced Placement Credit

Advanced placement credit does not transfer from one institution to another. Each time you transfer, your credit must be sent from Princeton, NJ.

The fee for each transcript is $15 for each AP transcript. You may request your transcript by calling 609 771-7300 or toll-free 888 225-5427.

You can also send a letter (including $15 for each transcript) to:

AP Exams
P.O. Box 6671
Princeton, NJ 08541-667

Your letter should include:

  • your name
  • gender
  • birth date
  • AP number or SS#
  • the year(s) you took the AP Exams
  • Miami University, Oxford, OH (the name, city, and state of the college to receive your transcript)

For exams taken more than 4 years ago, you must send a letter and check ($25 per recipient) to the address above, including your name at the time you took the exam, date of birth, social security number, current mailing address, daytime phone number, the year the exam was taken, name of the exam, name of the high school you attended, and the name and address of the institution to which you'd like your AP grades sent.

T Number Courses

Your courses have been evaluated by Miami's Office of the Registrar. You will note that some of the courses appear on your transcript with Miami course numbers while others have been given T numbers. The 'T' denotes transfer ( e.g. ENG T01). The courses which do not seem to have a Miami equivalent have been given T numbers. These courses can be re-evaluated by the appropriate academic department. To have a course re-evaluated please follow these steps:

  1. Have course syllabus or text book available.
  2. Make an appointment with a divisional adviser for the proper referral.
  3. Make an appointment to see the appropriate Chief Departmental
Adviser who, after reviewing your academic material, will evaluate the course.

Just because courses are assigned T numbers does not mean that they can not be applied to requirement categories.

English Composition

Transfer students often have questions about the English Composition requirement. Some institutions do not have a direct equivalent to Miami's English Composition courses, but offer specialized courses which provide intense composition and literary experiences. In some instances, a transfer student may have tested out of the English Composition requirement at his/her other school. In these unique circumstances, it will be necessary to meet with the Director of Freshman Composition, Diana Royer, for further assessment. The phone number for the Office of College Composition is (513) 529-5221.

Foreign Language

Students planning to earn a degree in the College of Arts and Science must pass a foreign language course at the 202 level. If you plan to continue with your high school foreign language, you must take a placement test. Miami offers placement tests in our computer lab for French, German, and Spanish. The placement tests for Russian and Latin are arranged through the departmental adviser. If, for example, you have completed the 101 and 102 levels at your original institution, you would continue with 201 and subsequently 202 at Miami.

Thematic Sequence

In addition to the Miami Plan Foundation requirements, the Miami Plan for Liberal Education requires students to complete a Thematic Sequence outside their department of major. Thematic Sequences are comprised of related courses that focus on a theme or subject in a developmental way. Normally students begin Thematic Sequences in the second semester of their sophomore year or the first semester of their junior year. You will find the list of approved Thematic Sequences in your transfer folder and at the Liberal Education Office, 229 Culler Hall.

Senior Capstone

The Capstone Experience (one course, 3 hours minimum), usually completed near the end of baccalaureate studies, integrates liberal learning with specialized knowledge. The capstone attempts to culminate your liberal education experience rather than simply require another course in your senior year. Capstones may be completed in or outside your major; in some departments, the Capstone Experience will be a requirement of the major. Although you do not need to declare a Senior Capstone, you must choose a capstone from an approved list of courses. It is important to note that many capstones require prerequisite courses. Updated capstone lists may be obtained at the Liberal Education Office, 229 Culler Hall.
