ATH 402: Anthropology of the Circus

Course Objectives:

  • Study the development of the American circus from its European origins to its modern form.
  • Analyze the American circus as a modern nomadic subculture specializing in the performing arts.
  • Apply anthropological perspectives in an examination of circus specialities: The acts, the artists, the animals, the clowns...
  • Examine the circus in American myth, etc., fact, and fancy, that is, as a part of american culture.
