High School (9-12) Biology Teacher Information
This program is a 32 semester credit hour, non-thesis degree
offered on a part-time basis primarily during the summer months.
MAT students typically take 8 or more credits per summer.
Degree Requirements
The MAT degree requires 32 credit hours of pertinent
graduate credit, consisting of:
- Formal Biology Courses (18
credit hours)
- At least one formal course must
be taken in each of the three participating
departments ...
Botany, Microbiology, and Zoology (9-12
credit hours)
- Formal in this context means the
course is a permanent offering of a department
- Informal courses are those
offerings that have been approved through the
Continuing Education Office, but are not part
of the permanent curriculum
- The Courses
web page indicates which courses
are formal and which are informal
- Other formal biology
courses offered by MAT program faculty may
be taken for the remainder of these 18 credit hours
- Other courses (14 credit hours) pertinent
to the MAT degree may be selected by you, but must
be approved by the MAT
Director, subject to these restrictions:
- No more than 8 credit hours of
courses taken in a different degree program at Miami
University may be transfered
into the MAT program. To obtain
approval for transfer of such a course:
- Send a letter requesting
approval of the transfer to
the MAT
Director
- Include a copy of your
transcript showing
the course(s) to be transferred
- No more than 8 credit hours may
be applied for courses transfered into
the program from other colleges
or universities. To obtain
approval for transfer of such a course:
- Send a
letter requesting
approval of
the transfer to
the MAT
Director
- Have an
official copy of
your transcript showing
the course(s) to
be transferred
must be mailed
directly to the MAT
Director by
the Registrar of
the college or
university where
you took the course(s)
- No more than 8 credit hours may
be applied for education courses,
regardless of where they were taken. To
obtain approval for transfer of an education
course:
- Send
a letter requesting
approval of
the transfer
to the MAT
Director
- Have
an official copy
of your transcript showing
the course(s)
to be transferred
must be mailed
directly to the MAT

the Registrar
of the college
or university
where you took
the course(s)
(an official
transcript is
required only
for courses taken
at other colleges
or universities)
- No more than 4 credit hours may
be applied for any course, or group of
similar courses regardless of
where they are taken (ensures that students
take a diverse array of courses). To
obtain approval for transfer of such
a course:
- Send a letter requesting
approval of the course
to meet degree requirements
to the MAT
Director
- Include a copy of your
Miami University transcript showing
the course
- One course in either organic chemistry or biochemistry
must be taken prior to graduation
- This course may have been taken prior
to beginning the MAT program
- If an undergraduate
beginning level course is selected to meet this program requirement,
as is typical, it will not count toward
the 32 graduate credit hour requirement
- Degree requirements must be met within a 5-year
period, beginning with your first term in the MAT program
- You may receive partial credit for
courses completed more than five years prior to the
date of graduation (two-thirds credit may be given
for approved courses taken at least five years prior;
one-third credit may be given for approved courses
taken more than ten years prior)
- This requires a petition to the
College of Arts and Sciences and/or to the Graduate
School as well as approval of the Director, and is initiated as follows:
- The MAT Director will
evaluate and forward the petition to the College of Arts and Sciences and/or
the Graduate School (as appropriate) with a recommendation
- After deliberation, the Petitions Committee will inform
both you and the MAT Director of its decision
- Graduate Handbook
Courses Web
Page
- As soon as the information is available each spring,
the MAT Director will list courses that count toward the
MAT degree on the Courses web
page
- Some courses not on this list also may apply,
such as those in cognate departments and in the School of
Education
- Contact the MAT Director to make sure that such
courses will apply toward the degree before you
take them
