STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTERESTS
My major focus is on alpha taxonomy and floristics. I am interested primarily in the identification and description of plant taxa, and their distributions. My main focus at the moment is on New World taxa of Trifolium (clovers, Leguminosae), but I have broader interests in the flora of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. I have in the past done quite a bit of research on fungal taxonomy and floristics, especially of the Deuteromycete fungi.
Presently, I am doing field research in Ohio, California, and the Bahamas, and am working on floristic projects in Trifolium for Arizona, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Mexico, using herbarium specimens. I am also working on several other family treatments for the Flora of North America and the Flora of China.
Since "biological pollution" is becoming more and more of a problem throughout the world, I am also very interested in the invasion of cultivated plants into "the wild." When cultivated plants become weeds, they may cause great problems for native plants (through competition) and animals (through loss of host species).
Here is a list of students whose research I have overseen:

TEACHING
My chief responsibility is curation
of the Willard Sherman Turrell. In addition to my curatorial
duties, I may teach several courses, such
as the following:
BOT F107 – Evolution: The Great Debate – A first-year student seminar on the topics of evolution, creationism, and intelligent design. Readings are assigned from each of the three areas, and students write papers on the readings and discuss them in class. One goal of the class is to develop critical thinking skills in the students.
BOT 302 - Plant Taxonomy - This is a course for majors and non-majors which covers all the basics of plant taxonomy, including morphology, plant families, the use of keys, the history of taxonomy, and current tools and concepts. The aim of this course is to prepare the student to understand basic taxonomic principles and to do field identifications.
BOT 499A/599A - Tropical Flora of the Bahamas - A two week field experience on Andros Island, Bahamas. The focus is to introduce students to a tropical flora from a taxonomic, ecological, and evolutionary perspective.
