UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
The Department of Botany encourages undergraduate students to get involved in research in plant biology. One way to do this is to assist a faculty member or graduate student in an ongoing research project, another is to design your own research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. Either way, the first step is to approach a Botany professor, either the instructor for one of your classes, or one whose research sounds interesting to you. The research interests of each faculty member are described under Research Areas.
The Department is located in Pearson Hall, a building with modern classrooms and research laboratories. Faculty and their students utilize several state-of-the-art facilities, including the Electron Microscopy Facility, Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, Ecology Research Center, greenhouses and a plant growth chamber facility, and the Turrell Herbarium.
Miami University supports undergraduate research through the Undergraduate Summer Scholars program, the undergraduate Research Awards program, the Doctoral-Undergraduate Opportunities for Scholarship, among other programs.
The Botany Department supports undergraduate research through the Academic Challenge grants program and by providing support to students attending national meetings to present their research. More information can be found under Research Support.
