Artist Tammy Garcia has achieved fame for her pottery far beyond the relatively young years of her life. An active potter since about 1985, she comes from a rich potting tradition. She is the granddaughter of Mary Cain and the great niece of Margaret Tafoya and she has honored the tradition of excellence of these women with her work. In a 1997 "Indian Artist Magazine" article titled "Meeting Pottery Tammy Garcia," Rosemary Diaz wrote, "In 10 years, she has achieved what most in the genre only dream of: she has produced a body of work so exceptional, so historically and culturally important, that she has been likened to such renowned talents as San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez and* Santa Clara potter Margaret Tafoya."

Garcia creates her pieces in the traditional Santa Clara Pueblo fashion, using only natural materials. Her polishing technique is above reproach and on carved pieces, her lines are firm and bold. She has been recognized with countless awards over the years, including "Best Up and Coming Artist" at the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show; "Best of Category" at the O'Odhamtash Show in Casa Grade, AZ; and "Best of Class," "Best in Category," & "Best of Division" awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Tammy Garcia was profiled in the 2004 Santa Fe Indian Market issue of Indian Market Magazine. In an article titled "Phenomenal Potters" by Gussie Fauntleroy, Tammy was grouped with five other artists as being among the best the art of clay has to offer.

Prior to her marriage to Leroy Garcia, Jr., Tammy signed her work "Tammy Borts." After her marriage, he work has been signed "Tammy Borts-Garcia" and "Tammy Garcia."
