Infrared and Raman Microspectroscopy, forensics, nanotechnology, biomedical

Scientist are being asked to identify and analyze ever smaller amounts of material. A solution to this problem involves the use of molecular microspectroscopy, which provides unique molecular fingerprints of isolated particles, or particles embedded in matrices. The size of the particulate that can be analyzed is limited, in part, to the analytical wavelengths employed for analyses (typical 1 to 14 micrometers) and instrumental design.

Research interests are, therefore, directed toward the development and applications of molecular microspectroscopies for chemical analysis and materials characterization. Specific areas involve the design, construction and characterization of novel Raman, luminescence and infrared microscopes with the goal of overcoming the wavelength limitation. Future goals are to employ the techniques in a quantitative capacity. More general areas involve methods development for the use of these techniques in a wide variety of disciplines.
