Dr. David A. Francko - Department of Botany and Associate Dean of Arts and Science Homepage

Studying the long term effects of winter on the distribution and survivorship of Palms

Dr. Kenneth G. Wilson - Department of Botany Undergraduate Advisor Homepage

Leading the work of tissue culture, RNA and protein experiments to artificially cold acclimate palms

Cathlene I. Leary-Elderkin, M.S. – Research Associate
Investigating tissue culture potential of bananas and palms from the Miami University collection of cold hardy specimens. My objective is to establish a protocol for propagation of cold hardy plants for the purpose of supplying a plant inventory for North by South Nursery.

Plant Regeneration
- Regeneration of cold hardy palms: refining the current protocol for consistent plant production for already regenerated Trachycarpus fortunei, optimizing the conditions for somatic embryogenesis of Sabal palmetto; trying to identify proteins associated with somatic embryogenesis in S. palmetto.
Transformation - Establishment of a method for the transformation of S. palmetto callus tissues using marker genes.
Proteomics - Identification of proteins associated with cold tolerance in palms using tissue cultures, field plants, and green house grown plants.

Lu Li- Doctoral student

Isolating potential cold-related genes from Miami University's palms, analyzing their functions, and trying to increase the cold-hardiness of palms.
