1. Interviews – “Video computer program aids students in job interviews.” Written by Kim Lloyd. Story profiles new computer interactive program developed by university professors and staff to help students with interviewing. The story also includes background information on how Dr. Vogel and his team developed the system. 1.5-page main bar, with half-page sidebar on tips of interviewing and headshot of Dr. Vogel.
2. Nature – “Studies show industrial chemicals harmful in nature.” Written by Kathy Menger. Story profiles Miami University zoologists and their findings in an experiment to study chemical pollutants and their effect on the biological community. 1.5-page main bar, with picture of Doug Taylor at The Ecology Research Center.
3. Hazleton – “International Studies get first full-time director.” Written by Sue Emert. Story profiles the expansion of Miami University’s International Studies program. Story also gives background on William Hazleton, who became the new acting director for the program. 1.5-page main bar, with picture of Hazleton.
4. Winkler – “History chair studies American response to the nuclear age.” Written by Jeff Williams. Story profiles Allan Winkler, the new chair of the history department, who is writing a book on the nuclear experience. 1.25-page main bar, with headshot of Allan Winkler.
5. Koffel – “Spanish in high school leads to college in Spain.” Written by Amy Goodburn. Story profiles Elizabeth Koffel, a Miami University senior Spanish major, who studied abroad in Seville, Spain. 1.25-page main bar, with headshot of Koffel.
6. Conference – “Spanish conference keeps teachers updated, in touch.” Written by Jennifer Lacki. Story profiles the development of the Conference on the Teaching of Spanish, which helps Spanish language educators establish contact with others in their profession. 1.25-page main bar, with picture of Elizabeth Rogers.
7. Pond – “’Pond scum’ could boost crop yield.” Written by Amy Goodburn. Story profiles professor Susan Barnum, assistant professor of botany, and her study of the genetics of blue-green algae and its effects on other plants. 1.25-page main bar, with picture of Barnum in botany laboratory.
8. Teletraining – “Telephone-computer link brings training to teachers.” Written by Ken Daffner. Story profiles a new project in the department of mathematics, which uses a new form of technology known as Teletraining. The new program uses telephones and computers to send information over the phone lines. 2-page main bar, with drop quote and picture of Jerry Stonewater and David Kullman at a computer.
9. Computers – “Computer lab supplements classroom, creates challenge.” Written by Amy Clarke. Story profiles the new College Computer Laboratory, which opened in January 1987. 1.25-page main bar, with picture of Cathy Beltz in computer lab.
10. X-rays – “X-rays shed light on atomic structures.” No author given. Story profiles a new X-ray diffractometer system, which was purchased with a grant from the National Science Foundation. The chemistry department hopes this instrument will help to study atomic arrangements. 1-page main bar, with picture of Professor Anatas Karipides and a student, a picture of the X-ray diffractometer at Hughes Laboratory, and a diagram of the atomic arrangement of lyonsite.
