1. War -- “World War Two. Just hearing those three words brings to mind horrible images of concentration camps with chimney stacks belching foul-smelling smoke night and day.” Written by Kerry Williams. A Miami History professor writes a novel aimed at middle-school aged readers in an effort to view World War Two through the eyes of an 11-year-old girl. 2.0 pages with a quarter page pull quote. 2. Domestic Violence -- “In the 16th and 17th centuries, a host of cheaply produced, widely distributed, readily accessible texts depicted women as threats to their husbands, children and neighbors.” Written by Charmaine Marosi. An Associate English Professor at Miami has published a book exploring accounts of women and servants as murderers titled “ Dangerous Familiars; Representations of Domestic Crime in England 1550-1700. 2.0 pages with a headshot photo on the first page of Professor Fran Dolan.
3. Systems in Concert -- “ If you happened to be walking down an unlit street at 3 o’clock in the morning and you heard steps running towards you what would you do?” Written by Todd Danielson. A neuroendocrinologist at Miami examines the relationships between the nervous and endocrine systems of the body in an effort to better understand the unique chemical messages that our bodies send and receive all the time. 3.0 pages with a headshot photo on the first page.
4. Speech Team -- “Like the sound of a train in the distance, the thought of “Top five in 95” has been ringing louder and louder in their dreams since the season began.” Written by Colleen Mytnick. The story chronicles the events that lead up to The Miami University Speech Team taking fifth place at the National Forensics Association’s Tournament. 3.0 pages, with a headshot photo on the first page of two team members, and a half page sidebar on the second page with facts about the team, and a half page pull quote on the third page.
5. Folklorist -- “The sounds coming from Mary Bertke’s CD were probably not representative of the music played in a typical college dorm room.” Written by Carrie E. Dodson. The story profiles Miami University student Mary Bertke who as a folklorist won a Goldman prize and plans to study abroad studying songs and culture in Ireland. 2.0 pages, with quarter page pull quote on the first page.
6. Ghana -- “Students may soon have a new opportunity for foreign study.” Written by Peggy Swearingen. The story focuses on a new study abroad program in Africa that is put together by Dr. Rodney Coates, professor of Black World Studies. 2.0 pages with a quarter page photo on page 2.
7. Fossils -- “Being named Miami University’s Researcher of the Year can normally be expected to be the highlight of any professor’s year.” Written by Todd Danielson. The story profiles Miami Geologist professor William Hart as he is named as 1994 Researcher of the Year at Miami as well telling the story of the role he played in the team of researchers who discovered the fossilized remains of 17 individuals of a pre-human species in Ethiopia. 3.0 pages, headshot photo on the first page of Professor Hart.
