1. Internet -- "Resolving the Internet: Students seek conflict resolution in www course" Written by Patrick Lynch. Students in Rodney Coates' Racial and Ethnic Relations: Conflict and Resolution" class uses the Internet and www to explore conflicts around the world. The course was created by Coates and covers hate groups, the conflict in Northern Ireland, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and uses the Internet in place of textbooks. 3 page main bar, two drop quotes, a head shot of Coates, a shot among students in class, and a shot of four students during a class.
2. Geology -- "Geology professorm city of Oxford, work together against future pollution" Written by Katie Peters. Geology professor Jonathan Levy and graduate student Eric Ludy were contacted by the city of Oxford to conduct a ground water study of Oxford's drinking water. The effort was made to better assess the dangers of pollutants in Oxford's ground water. 1.5 page main bar; sidebar of hydrogeology terms; pictures of Levy instructing students in the field, and of students installing a creek well.
3. Diversity- "Pilot diversity seminar promotes insight, learning" Written by Benjamin Fields. 4. Gore -- "Internship with Gore offers taste of White House" Written by Katie Peters. Miami senior Haley Brown spent first semester as an intern assisting Tipper Gore, Vice-President Al Gore's wife. 5. Pierce -- "Writer and professor shares novel, hope with students" Written by Marly Ellis. Author and professor Constance Pierce discusses her novel Hope Mills to Miami English students. The book won the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Prize for Fiction in 1995 and the Pushcart Press Editors' Book Award. Miami professor Don Daiker taught the book in a course called Love, Gender, and Sexuality in American Fiction. 6. Telecourse -- "National telecourse features Maimi professor, German lessons" Written by Justin Williamson. Miami German professor Robert DiDonato has designed a telecourse to be broadcast in the fall of 1998 on Boston's Public Broadcasting Station. The telecourse was produced for PBS. The course consists of mini-dramas aimed to teach beginning to intermediate German, while including German culture as well. 2 pages, 2 drop quotes. Head shot of DiDonato.
7. Researcher -- "Researcher of the Year Ann Hagerman says tannins may help" Written by Patrick Lynch. Overview of Hagerman's research on tannins, the substance some plants produce to make them unappetizing to animals and humans. Hagerman is studying the possible health benefits of tannins as an antioxidant. For her research, she was awarded Researcher of the Year by the Miami Chapter of Sigma Xi. 2 pages, 1 drop quote, 2 pcitures of Hagerman in the lab.
8. Forensics -- Miami Forensic team catches a wave of the future" Written by Katie Smith. Miami Forensics director Ben Voth uses the Internet and lap top computer as a resource for competitive public speaking. Voth seeks to use computers to research for extemperaneous speech competitions, accessing databases like Lexis/Nexis. Voth's program to combine Internet technology and public speaking has also been utilized in COM 135 and COM 132. 3 pages, 2 drop quotes. 9. Scholars -- "Junior Scholars 'Dad' supports students, program" Written by Justin Williamson. Biographical sketch of Dr. Robert Smith, mathematics professor and Miami Junior Scholars director. Known as "Dad" for his warm relationship with Junior Scholars. 2 pages, group shot of Smith with two junior scholar students.
10. Historian -- "A journey through the life of historian Edwin Yamauchi" Written by Katie Smith. Biographical piece on History Professor. Describes his upbringing in Hawaii to a widowed Japanese mother, his early interest in Christianity and Mediterranean languages, and books he has written on ancient Christianity and language.. At time of publication, Yamauchi was editing his 16th book. 3 pages. Shot of Yamauchi at desk, covers of 2 of his books.
11. Gerontologist -- "Leading gerontologist embraces spirituality as studen and teacher" Written by Melissa Baker. Describes now retired director of Gerontology Center, Robert Atchley, and his accomplishments within the program. Pays special attention to Atchley's spiritual side, and it's relationship to his studies of aging. 2 pages, 2 drop quotes. 2 photos of Atchley at his retirement party.

12. History -- "Tweed Poisoning, or professing history" by Elliot Gorn. Professor Elliott Gorn writes an essay on public perceptions of historians, perceptions from others in academia, and why he became a proffesor of history. Gorn describes the importance of Americans having a history, not just a memory; having the latter, he argues, prepares us poorly for tragedy. 2 pages, small head shot photo.
13. Statistics -- "Statistical Myths and Realities" by Emily Murphree. Statistician Murphree writes to explain to an audience what an statistician's job is, what statisticians actually do. Provides several in depth, real-life applicable examples to illustrate the duties of the profession. 4 pages, 2 columns. 3 small graphics to aid examples, one head shot of Murphree.
