1. Mattox - “Karl Mattox has bountiful life as botanist, dean, and family man.” Written by Steve Adams. Story profiles the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, Karl Mattox, outlines his family life and accomplishments as a botanist. 3-page story with head shot and Mattox on tractor.
2. Estep - “Nathan Estep leaves mark as student body president.” Written by Scott Suzuki. Story profiles Student Body President Nathan Estep, outlining his career goals, what he had done as president, and how he dealt with racial tensions. 2.5 page story with .5 page sidebar of Distinguished Service Award text. Head-shot of Estep and photo of Estep receiving award.
3. Recreate - “Students recreate Oxford in 1851-52 while taking living history course.” Written by Aimee Berquist. Story profiles history class that studied the styles and culture of Oxford, 1851 and how the idea of the class came about. 2-page story. Photo of student with recreated costume and photo professor as an Oxford character.
4. Rome - “Professors bring Rome to life.” Written by Joseph Gallagher. Story profiles a virtual Rome website created from a grant found by classics professors. 2.5 page story with photos of professors at computer and Judith de Luce with a student.
5. Chimps - “Anthropologists find chimpanzees as a model for studying human origins.” Written by Dana Wasserman. Story profiles William McGrew and Linda Merchane, two professors who have studied how chimpanzees are similar to humans and what can be learned. 3-page story with two photos of professors with chimpanzee skull.
6. Catalysts - “Chemist shows how catalysts can benefit humans - from energy to medicine.” Written by Steve Adams. Story profiles the discoveries of chemistry professor James Cox in the field of catalysts, and how catalysts can be used. 2-page story with photo of Cox in lab and large drop quote.
7. German - “Computer program assists student in checking grammar in German essays.” Written by Claire Schrader. Story profiles programs created by German professor Ruth Sanders including a grammar checking program and a game created to help German students. 1.5 page story with photo of Sanders.
8. Interracial - “Professor, graduate student examine interracial relations on campus.” Written by Katie Peters. Story profiles a study done by clinical psychology professor Margaret Wright and a student, Linh Littleford on racial issues at Miami, sparked by a letter in The Miami Student. 2-page story with photos of Littleford and Wright and drop quote.
9. Aging - “Retirement can be an age of growth, says new Scripps head.” Written by Catherine O’Connor. Story profiles Suzanne Kunkel, the new director of Scripps Gerontology Center and her dedication to break the stereotypes of aging. 1.5 page story with head shot of Kunkel.
10. AIDS - “Senior defers med school to help prevent HIV and AIDS in Africa.” Written by Katie Peters. Story profiles student Sarah Stewart who had worked in India and Africa to combat AIDS instead of going to medical school. 2.5 page story with photo of Stewart and photo of Stewart at a hospital in India.
11. Botanist - “Botanist studies aquatic plants, algae in wetlands on Ohio’s Lake Erie coast.” Written by Dana Wasserman. Story profiles department chair and botany professor David Francko and the Sea Grant projects he has done on Ohio plants. 3-page story with head-shot of Francko and Francko in front of Pearson Hall.
12. Tribal - “Miami Programs work to strengthen university and Miami tribal relations.” Written by Lindsay LaVine. Story profiles anthropology professor James Hamill, who has worked with the Miami Tribe to study linguistics and record history. 2-page story with photo of Hamill with Mark Warner, photo of anthropology students at campgrounds, and students at an archeology site.
13. Rockandroll - “Students study philosophy of Rock and Roll by examining lrics of ’62 to ’74 music.” Written by Lindsay LaVine. Story profiles a class created by philosophy professor James Kelly which studies how classic rock lyrics present a philosophy of the 1960’s. 2-page story with photo of Kelly and Kelly with student.
14. Fly - “Zoology student studies how ecology in the forest affects common vinegar fly.” Written by Michael Gruss. Story profiles student Jennifer Marlowe who has been recognized for her studies of flies and won grants for her research. 2-page story with two photos of Marlowe in lab.
15. Goldwater - “Three students win prestigious Goldwater Scholarships.” Written by Catherine O’Connor. Story profiles Justin Montgomery, Lisa Chatman, and Greg Cooper who received the national math, science, and engineering award, the Goldwater Scholarship. 1.5 page story with photo of three students.
16. Essay - “’Teach the Children Well’ - Reflections on a classroom career.” Written by Allan M. Winkler. An essay by Winkler, a history professor, on his thoughts of teaching and relations with students. 2-pages with head shot of Winkler.
17. Dialogue - “A teacher’s job is never done: The practice of dialogue.” Written by Ramon Layera. An essay by Layera, a Spanish professor who received the Outstanding Educator Award from the College of Arts and Sciences. 4-page essay with head shot of Layera and four drop quotes.
