1. Groger – “Cultural Cross roads. Groger brings life experiences to gerontology.” Written by Joseph Gallagher. Lisa Groger thrives after birth in Sudetenland. She earned a doctorate from Columbia University, despite no high school degree. 2.33-page main bar, with shot of Groger at desk and one drop quote.
2. Ralston – “Miami ROTC honors Gen. Ralston.” No byline. Ralston, the nation’s second ranking military officer, received honorary Doctor of Law at celebration of 50th anniversary of Miami’s Air Force ROTC. .66-page sidebar, with shot of Ralston toast, getting ready to drink form the military “grogg,” and shot of Ralston giving speech at podium.
3. Sandlin – “Winning the gold. Chemistry major earns Goldwater.” Written by Joseph Gallagher. Zechariah Sandlin, who grew up near Dayton, credits father’s guidance for winning $7,500 scholarship. 1-page main bar, with head shot of Sandlin.

8. Stewart – “Miami graduate wins British Marshall Scholarship.” Sarah Stewart won a $26,000 scholarship to earn a master’s degree abroad, the only Ohio recipient. No byline. .25-page sidebar with no photography.
9. Cook – “Language quest. Cook uses award to write Miami children’s book.” Written by Dana Johnson. Callie Cook won the Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Prize of $19,500, the largest undergraduate scholarship given annually to one student who will spend the year after graduation trying to reach a goal otherwise hindered by lack of money. 2-page main bar, with shot of Cook reading to elementary children, and shot of Cook with Miami Tribe Chief Leonard and his wife. 13. Ghana – “Journey in learning. Ghana exchange offers students diverse cultural experiences.” Written by Alicia L. Boudreau.
