American Studies:

The American Studies program (AMS) wants it students to take what they are learning within the classroom and apply it to the outside world. The program is in the process of using its more than $80,000 in Provost office award money and other grants to revise and enhance the curriculum. Two of the main ideas for change focus on what American culture is and how individuals are products of it; the second is focused on how individuals shape American culture. 2004.
Anthropology:

"Anthropology of the Circus" is about a class, ATH 402. 2004

Communication:

Speech communication has a new pre-major, which has cut down on the number of students enrolling and is developing a "strategic communication" major. 2004
Distinguished Educator Award:

"Distinguished Educators Share Valuable Insights"

In 2003-2004 a committee of past winners and faculty members chose Dr. Carl Paternite, professor of psychology, and Dr. Sheila Croucher, associate professor of political science as Distinguished Educators.   Every year the College of Arts and Science recognizes two faculty members with this award who have proven to be invaluable members of the Miami community.   Paternite and Croucher were chosen and evaluated by their teaching qualifications, the research they have developed, accomplishments they have received, and the way their teaching is perceived by students.   Both professors believe that their teaching is successful because they involve the students, making learning an active experience.

English:

Program hot off the press -- The restructuring of the Journalism major.   The program will be different from journalism programs at other schools.   The emphasis of the new program will be the convergence of Interactive Media Studies program, web publishing, video editing and a required second major. 2004.

Creative writing: practical major? - The creative writing, within the English Department, was also revised.   More workshops were added to the curriculum. 2004

Film studies:

Reporter Katie Goodhew wrote about the documentary, "This Old Club," filmed by Miami alum Jeff Santo.   The documentary tells the story of Ron Santo, Jeff's father and a major league baseball player.   Not just a film about baseball, the documentary also tells the story of Ron Santo's courageous struggle with diabetes and his support for the Chicago Cubs. 2004.

Reporter Michelle Groene wrote about the premiere of English professor Kay Sloan's film, "Suffragettes in Silent Cinema."   This film examines how silent films affected women's right to vote. 2004.

Story by Lopez Williams about the formation of the Miami Association of Filmmakers and Independent Actors (MAFIA), a club that increases filmmaking opportunities on Miami's campus.Three mass communication majors started MAFIA due to the limited resources available to them on campus.   The mass communication equipment is only available to students working on projects for class, but MAFIA provides equipment for any students in the club who have a special film project in mind. 2004.

Geology:

"The Karl E. Limper Geology Museum is only 36 years old, but it brings the prehistoric age to life each day through a variety of artifacts."--A feature article written by Meredyth Sajna profiles some of the interesting objects that can be found in the Geology Museum located in Shidler Hall.   2004

GREAL:

Classes in Arabic language and culture are introduced at Miami at the request of interested and concerned students. 2004.

Honors:

"Research: Presenting their Best" The Honors and Scholars program saw over 200 students complete and present original research at the Undergraduate Research Forum in spring 2004. The Office for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching began the forum in 1995 and expanded in 2002 when the Honors program, College of Arts and Science and the provost's office joined the organization in bringing all campus-wide research to one place.   2004.

  "Honors Program Helps to Send Students Abroad"

Almost double the amount of students from its inaugural year are expected to participate in the honors program's summer tuition waiver.   Only 35 students participated in 2003, while about 60 are expected to participate during the 2004 summer.   The waiver is aimed to help defray the cost of tuition for honors students who have completed two years at Miami, has a g.p.a of at least 3.5, and has completed eight "honors experiences."   The waiver will pay for up to eight credit hours for a Miami-sponsored or Miami-affiliated programs during the summer.   2004

Interactive Media Studies (IMS):

The Interactive Media Studies capstone allows students to gain experience working on real-life Internet projects for national companies. 2004.

International Studies:

"Doorway to the world: Take a peek at Miami's new International Studies Program" by Katie Janko. This article rests heavily on the newly renovated MacMillan Hall, changes in ITS major requirements, and the addition of two professors in the growing department. Janko provides the areas of concentration that are now available to new ITS majors.   It provides a general overview of the program, focusing on recent changes. 2004.

Luxembourg: in its first appearance in Compass.

"Luxembourg's living history: Professor and European campus celebrate 35 years." By Jessica Flint. This story profiles Dr. Emile Haag's contribution to Miami's 35-year-old successful Luxembourg campus. 2004.

Math:

Story by Melinda McCormick about Miami's Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematical Sciences Day.   For the past 13 years, Dr. Emily Murphree, an associate professor of statistics at Miami, has hosted the Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematical Sciences Day in honor of a 19 th century Russian woman and mathematician.   This day allows high school girls the opportunity to explore the possibilities of a career in mathematics. 2004.

Middletown Campus:

Middletown professor Tammy Allen teaches occupational

Spanish in the community as the Hispanic population grows. 1 page with picture of Allen and drop quote. 2004.

Physics:

Two-sentence brief and photo of a student's independent study on the physics of rock climbing

Political Science:

ROTC:

Air Force ROTC: Col. Kimble Stohry teaches a class to Air Force ROTC which is geared toward preparing the cadets for active duty. Stohry went above the requirements and altered the curriculum. He taught his students about retirement planning, money management, and other financial issues by using his own life experience. 2004.

The Naval ROTC participated in a firefighting drill in the Miami Manor apartments before they were torn down. ROTC partnered with Miami Fire Marshall Randy Hormann and set-up a drill, which involved smoke-filled rooms and a flashlight hidden in a closet, which simulated a "flashing fire."

Spanish/Portugese:

The New Latin Beat Students engage in evening of original Spanish poetry. Students from SPN 430 studied Latin American poetry in class and later wrote their own poems to perform at a reading in the spring.   Professor Maria Alvarez, who started writing poetry at age 13, taught the class and organized the reading, which allowed students to express themselves creatively in another language. 2004.

Technology:

Wired prototype classrooms help students connect to knowledge and each other in new ways. 2004.

Women's Studies:

The Real Deal, pgs. 20-21. Sally Lloyd, former director of the WMS program, shares her history with women's studies and passes the torch to Cheryl Johnson, current director of WMS.   Students share their first time experiences from WMS classes and learn that the theories "just make sense". 2004.
