Giving Credit Where Credit is Due...

The 2005 Compass capstone class comprised 25 undergraduate students and one faculty member, Judi Hetrick. Short biographies about the contributor are found below:

Naila Awan graduated in May 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in English: journalism and speech communication: public relations and completed a business journalism emphasis. She is taking a year off and hoping to work abroad in journalism before continuing her education.

 

Rebecca Bibbo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English: journalism and an emphasis in business. Although she is unsure of her plans for the future, she will reside in her hometown, Chagrin Falls, during the summer months. Rebecca would like to thank members of the reporting team for their support and encouragement throughout the semester.

 

Kristen Carlson graduated with an B.A. in English: journalism with a business emphasis. She was a contributing writer for Miami's entertainment newspaper, The Amusement. She hopes to pursue a career writing for an entertainment publication.

 

 

Amy Cavanaugh graduated with an A.B. in English: journalism with a business emphasis. She found the Compass experience so interesting and rewarding that she will expand her magazine journalism horizons as an intern with Style Magazine in Baltimore, MD (her hometown), this summer. Amy wishes to thank the entire Compass staff for their hard work and determination and Judi Hetrick for her expertise and guidance.

 

 

Kevin Chlum graduated with an A.B. in English: journalism. He has been a part-time sports reporter at the Palladium-Item in Richmond, IN., since mid-August 2004 and plans to stay on until he can find a full-time job. Kevin hopes to find a job as a sports writer at a daily newspaper. He is from the south suburbs of Chicago and would eventually like to make it back there. While at Miami, Kevin held several positions at The Miami Student and was a member of Gamma Epsilon Lambda, a coed service fraternity.

 

After graduation, Mary FitzSimons will be taking a year off to backpack throughout Europe with friends. In August 2006, she will move to New York City to begin a master's program at New York University for magazine writing. Mary studied journalism with a business emphasis while at Miami and spent a semester abroad in Luxembourg.

Jenny Hall is an English: journalism major and a member of the visual reporting team.   Upon graduation, she will take on a management position with Walgreens.

 

Judi Hetrick has been teaching journalism at Miami for five years. She earned her Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University in 1999. Before graduate school, she worked in various newspaper editing jobs in the Midwest and South.

 

 

Lisa Knapp graduated from Miami University in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English: journalism. She hopes to pursue a career in development and fundraising for a non-profit organization. Lisa would like to thank all who contributed to her article, "The Road to Hollywood," especially A.J. Rickert-Epstein, Phillip Shriver and Pete Martin.

 

Heather Lash graduated with an English: journalism degree in May. She looks forward to using her writing and creative talents to write for a fashion or entertainment magazine in New York. She enjoyed working with the entire Compass staff, especially her wonderful reporting team.

 

Andrea Meier graduated in May with a B.S. in marketing and an A.B. in English with a concentration in journalism. She is from Baltimore, MD., and has a younger brother. While at Miami, Andrea lived off-campus at "Home Plate" with eight other women.  

 

Brianna Miller graduated from Miami with a dual major in speech communication and English: journalism, along with a minor in management. She is from Silver Creek, NY, and plans to return home and start her career.

 

 

Sarah Minges graduated with an English: journalism degree. Post-graduation, she plans on staying in the Cincinnati area to work for a local newspaper.   However, she enjoys traveling and would eventually like to be a foreign war correspondent.

 

Marie Mirro graduated with a degree in English: journalism and a minor in political science. She wrote for the Uptown Catholic as well as being editor of the alumnae newletter for her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. She plans on attending law school in the fall of 2005 to study criminal law. In her far future, Marie would like to be a sports writer for the Chicago Tribune.

 

Zach Parks is graduating Miami with a degree in English: journalism and political science. He plans on attending law school in 2006.

 

Kate Porick is a member of Miami's graduating class of 2005. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she graduates Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in both Spanish and English: journalism.   Kate is currently a traveling leadership consultant for her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, and will likely attend graduate school in 2006.   At Miami, she wrote for The Miami Student newspaper, was the executive vice president of the Pan-Hellenic Association in 2004, and was a member of the University Honors and Scholars program, among other things.

 

Becky Reichenbecher graduated from Miami with a major in English: journalism, while also earning a minor in political science. After graduating in May 2005, Becky is moving to Highland Heights, KY, where she will attend Northern Kentucky University's Salmon P. Chase College of Law.

 

Liz Schilling is a senior majoring in English: journalism and public relations. After graduating in December 2005, she hopes to travel around the world. Then, she plans to pursue a career in travel writing.

 

 

Abigail Schrader graduated with an English: journalism degree and a minor in gerontology. She really enjoyed working on Compass and it will be beneficial in the future. Abigail would like to thank Judi and the leaders that put many hours into making this magazine a success.

 

Katherine Seiffert is a double major in international studies and English: journalism.   She plans to work as a project assistant in a Chicago law firm for a year to gain practical experience before entering law school.   It is her hope that through that experience and education that she will practice environmental and/or international law in Chicago, the best city in America.   Katherine would like to thank all of those who dedicated their last semester to the successful production of this magazine.

 

Ashley Thomas is a double major in English and integrated language arts education. She plans to begin teaching next year at an innovative middle or high school in the Cincinnati or Dayton area, and eventually earn a master's degree in special education. She loves her puppy Dobby, an Australian Shepard/Shar-pei mix, more than anyone in the world! She also enjoys walks on the beach and volunteering at area nursing homes.

 

Juliet Thomas graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts in English: journalism and political science. She loved the people she met and the time she spent at Miami, but is looking forward to moving on to a career that utilizes her love of writing, interest in government, and genuine concern for helping others.

 

Lyndsay Walters is a senior English: journalism and political science major, graduating in May 2005.   The daughter of Mark and Andrea Walters, Lyndsay has two sisters, Laura and Lydia, and is from Zionsville, IN, a suburb of Indianapolis.   At Miami, Lyndsay has been involved with the women's club volleyball team and Campus Activities Council, a division of the Associated Student Government as well as periodically writing for The Miami Student.

 

Compass has been a worth while experience. Natalie Weygandt says she was lucky to be on the design team. The group meshed so well together. The group was able to collaborate on a lot of different ideas and are so pleased with this edition's design. After working on Compass, Natalie desire to work on the design/layout aspect of a magazine has blossomed. She is continuing her job search for a opening in the magazine industry. Natalie has tentative plans to move to New York City this fall.

 

Gabrielle Wlodarsky is an English: journalism major with a minor in women's studies.   After graduation in May, Gabrielle is still undecided as to where to go, but she is looking for a job as a copy editor/page designer for a daily newspaper.  

 

Amanda Wolfe is a senior journalism and mass communication double major with a minor in political science. She was the managing editor of The Miami Student and the 2004 American Society of Magazine Editors intern for Parents Magazine. She plans to move to New York City June 1 and pursue a career in the magazine industry.
