Finding Freedom Summer is a project developed by the Center for American and World Cultures and the Department of Theatre.
The project involves the creation of new and/or expanded curricula on the topic of Civil Rights and culminates in a spring 2006 theatre performance that explores and memorializes the history, issues, and personal narratives surrounding the summer of 1964. The project includes classes in various disciplines that focus on U.S. Civil Rights history and race relations, lectures by faculty and guest scholars with expertise in this topic, presentations by Freedom Summer 1964 participants and their families, oral histories with participants (as well as the use of previously recorded ones), and workshops with theatre artists to explore memories, emotions, and creative representations of the event.
This website provides information about the various events and initiatives included in Finding Freedom Summer, related projects such as the Western College Program Freedom Summer Scholars Program and the Western College Memorial Archives, and a page of links to websites related to Freedom Summer.
