About Us

The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) was established in August 1969 and its Master of Environmental Science (M.En.) professional degree program began in September, 1971 — since then over 600 students have earned the M.En. degree.
An Interdisciplinary Approach
Our program philosophy emphasizes a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues and the effective communication of knowledge and information. The curriculum stresses problem solving and the ability to work in and lead interdisciplinary teams and to work with government officials, business leaders, and the public.
Flexibility
You can choose from several areas of concentration or develop an individualized program. You also have the choice to complete any one of the following in fulfillment of the research requirement:
- internship
- practicum
- thesis
Public Service
Students perform Public Service Projects (PSPs) for communities, organizations, and individuals in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana. This community service emphasis, coupled with environmental problem solving techniques, is a cornerstone of our program.
Teamwork to Solve Problems
An important objective of the core curriculum is to develop a respect for and understanding of the various disciplines involved in the solution of environmental problems. Students of varying backgrounds work as a team to undertake and complete the public service project. During this process students often work with faculty from different departments, as well as with government officials and community leaders. Our graduates are well equipped to work in and lead interdisciplinary teams.
