Master of Environmental Science (M.En.)
Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to prepare students for immediate employment as an environmental professional. We emphasize problem solving and communication skills, as well as teamwork and professionalism. Over the past several decades, our hundreds of graduates have had outstanding opportunities and careers with consulting firms, governmental agencies, and non-profit agencies.
Core Courses (first year, 24 credit hours)
These courses provide students with a common frame of reference, a background in the nature of environmental problems, and approaches used to solve them. Typically, all first-year students take these courses together — fostering the kind of teamwork and integration of concepts that are fundamental to environmental professions. This part of the M.En. curriculum includes an orientation field trip, a survey of principles and applications of environmental science, environmental measurements, environmental methodology, environmental statistics, environmental impact assessment and risk analysis, policy-making and administration, environmental analysis and modeling, and a Public Service Project.
Area of Concentration (15 credit hours)
The areas of concentration supplement the core courses by providing depth in a particular area. A student might choose courses to build on existing strengths from undergraduate or employment experience ... or he/she can opt to develop a new area of specialization. IES staff and Miami faculty provide advice on which courses will best meet a student's career objectives.
Research Requirement
The research requirement is designed to provide each student with professional-level experience that helps develop expertise in applied environmental science. The student has 3 options for completing the research requirement:
- internship (6+ months)
- practicum
- thesis
