Curriculum

Our curriculum consists of 3 primary components:

This three-tiered approach provides each student with:

  • the knowledge and methodology for tackling a broad spectrum of environmental issues
  • the unique skills required for a particular focus
  • professional-level experience in applied research

Orientation

Students on orientation field trip photoIncoming students participate in 3 days of orientation field trips, where students observe and interact with environmental professionals in their workplaces. Field trips are designed to help the new student choose which aspect of environmental science he/she would like to have as a focus. These trips also provide a great opportunity for new students to get to know each other, as well as IES faculty members outside the classroom. Destinations vary each year, but previous trips have included stops at Mill Creek, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (Columbus), the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Columbus), the Aullwood Audubon Center (near Dayton).

Travel Opportunities

For example, LifeLong Learning offers many study abroad workshops, particularly during the summer. Many of these workshops have environmental themes such as wildlife conservation, natural resource sustainability, environmental education, ecosystem ecology, and energy efficiency. Opportunities are available for travel to Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe, as well as within the Americas.

Jobs and Internships

Stream research photoOver the past several decades, an increasing number of governmental agencies, corporate divisions, and consulting firms have been established to deal with environmental problems. IES provides considerable assistance to students in locating suitable internships and employment. Representatives from industry, government, and consulting firms are frequently brought to campus to augment classroom instruction; students have many opportunities to interact and network with potential employers.
