GENERAL INFORMATION FOR MAJORS
B.A. in INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
International Studies (ITS) at Miami University is a multidisciplinary major through which students can incorporate an international dimension and a foreign area of interest into their undergraduate education. The program in International Studies consists of four interrelated components:
 |
A series of core courses covering international politics, economics and business, geography and diplomatic history; |
 |
Individually selected foreign areas of emphasis in which students take a minimum of twelve hours in at least three different disciplines or fields; |
 |
Achieving proficiency in a modern foreign language which provides important communication skills as well as additional depth in the chosen regional area of emphasis. |
 |
At least one semester of study abroad. |
Students have some flexibility in satisfying these requirements. In addition, elective hours can be utilized to acquire more knowledge in a specialized field leading, for example, to an area studies minor, or to becoming proficient in a second foreign language. The student may also pursue work in a related discipline that might result in a "double major" such as ITS and Economics. Students who complete a second major or a minor automatically fulfill the Miami Plan thematic sequence requirement. Most credits earned while studying abroad apply directly toward the degree.

NOTE:
Most departments periodically offer special courses (not listed in catalog) under "0" ending numbers; check specific titles at time of their offering. Courses in a language will NOT count if they are in the principle language of the student. Exceptions allowed: CHI 252, 255; FRE 366, 411; GEO 250, 261, 304, 305; JPN 172, 254; RUS 137, 255, 256; and SPN 433; so long as they are NOT used toward language requirement hours. Most "regional" courses taken in overseas study programs can be credited toward the foreign area emphasis component of the major; however, students should consult the Director prior to departure to determine which courses are appropriate.
