  • Botany
  • Biochemistry and Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Zoology

you may be eligible for either or both of the following 2 scholarships, sponsored and funded by the National Science Foundation external link icon(NSF).

Scholarship to Recruit and Retain Undergraduate Chemistry and Biochemistry Students

Goals

This program is designed to increase the number of professional chemists and biochemists by providing opportunities to enhance undergraduate training, particularly in the areas of laboratory experience and independent research.

Who is Eligible?

  • students who are (or intend to be) Chemistry and Biochemistry majors
  • students who have financial need

Scholarship to Provide Undergraduate Research Experiences for Underrepresented Groups in the Life Sciences *

* In keeping with NSF Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (URM) goals, the Achieving Success in Science through Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (ASSURE) program seeks to broaden participation of members of groups historically underrepresented in science and engineering: African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, Native Pacific Islanders, and persons with disabilities.

Goals

This program is intended to provide academic enrichment opportunities to students throughout their undergraduate career and to increase the visibility of underrepresented groups in the biological sciences. There will be opportunities for:

  • conducting research
  • strengthening academic skills in introductory courses
    (BOT 115/116, MBI 115/116, ZOO 115/116,
    CHM 141/142/241)
  • completing a minor in Molecular Biology or Neuroscience
  • acquiring scientific communication skills
    (BOT 207, CHM 207, MBI 207, ZOO 207)
  • exploring careers

    • Chemistry and Biochemistry
    • Microbiology
    • Zoology

Preference is given to students in their freshman year. First-year majors, or those considering a major in these departments are encouraged to enroll in BOT/CHM/MBI/ZOO 102, Introduction to Research in Biology (fall term).
