Academic Advising

All students have a first year adviser who resides in their residence hall. Students with declared majors are assigned a faculty adviser in the second semester of their first year. Students with undeclared majors are advised by professional staff in the College of Arts and Science Advising Office (146 Upham Hall; 529-3031).

  • The advising staff help students make decisions about majors/minors/thematic sequences; they monitor academic progress, assist with course planning, and discuss other academically related concerns with students.
  • The advising staff present workshops throughout the year for students undecided about their major; workshops also spotlight career opportunities for Arts and Science majors (What Can I Do with a Major in Arts & Science?); special advising sessions are held for transfer and new Miami students.
  • The Career Exploration and Testing Center (196 Health Services Center; 529-4645) coordinates a range of programs and services designed to help students assess their skills, interests, and values and explore their academic and career options.
  • Students have 24-hour access to their Degree Audit Reports through BannerWeb.

Scholarships

Faculty in the College of Arts and Science assist students to prepare for competitive national scholarships like the Rhodes, Truman, Goldwater, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, Beinecke, and the Udall Scholarships. The Undergraduate Summer Scholars program enables Miami undergraduates to do research and other creative activites in the summer under the supervision of an individual faculty mentor.

Internships

Internships provide students with the opportunity to explore a career, build work-related skills, and network with potential employers. The nature of each internship varies — they may be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid, for credit or not for credit, etc.

Careers

In addition to promoting student academic success, Miami University provides resources to assist students in achieving their career goals. A recent survey of College of Arts and Science graduates is a testament to both the quality of our students and the success of the university's career-related services. Between 1/3 and 1/2 of the college's graduates chose to further their education in professional, business, and other graduate schools. Over 90% of the remaining graduates found immediate employment!

International/Study Abroad Opportunities

Miami University offers hundreds of study abroad opportunities in dozens of countries for students in all academic majors. Miami encourages its students to study abroad for a semester, summer term, or an academic year— and more than 1300 students do so every year. However, summer and short-term programs are also available.

Multicultural Opportunities

In 1996, the Office of Residence Life and New Student Programs teamed with the College of Arts and Science to create the Mosaic Living Learning Community for first year students interested in learning about different cultures and lifestyles. Full time faculty members volunteer to teach IDS 151, a diversity seminar, in Mosaic's residence hall. Several multicultural organizations focus on special career interests, such as Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS).

Computer Facilities

The College of Arts and Science operates 2 open use/teaching computer labs for the use of students, faculty, and staff. The labs are located in Bachelor Hall and Upham Hall. The college also houses the Interactive Language Resource Center which provides students with the equipment and materials needed to complete their foreign language course requirements. Miami University provides additional computer labs for student use.

Dean's Student Advisory Council

The Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC) is a group of 8-12 students who represent a variety of majors in the college's different cognate areas and who span all 4 undergraduate years. It is the council's duty to serve as a liaison between the student body and the College of Arts and Science administration, providing the Dean with student perspectives of current university issues and concerns.  To do this, DSAC members meet with the Dean and the academic advising office staff a monthly basis. DSAC members are selected from students who have been nominated for the DSAC by faculty and staff.
