Dear Friends:

The Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program is gearing up for an exciting 2011-2012 academic year. Our newly streamlined curriculum makes the process of majoring, double majoring, or minoring in WGS more possible than ever. And why would one want to major or minor in WGS, you may ask? Well, for starters, there is the flexible and innovative liberal arts education that we provide in a setting that values student self-development and critical engagement with others and the world. In fact, our newly redesigned WGS 201 course (Introduction to Women's Studies) was recently presented at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) "Shared Futures: General Education for a Global Century" Summer Institute as a model for integrating accountable global learning with meaningful intercultural focus on local communities and concerns. Intercultural competency and knowledge of one's situation in transnational and global networks of power are important in their own right; however, data from potential employers reinforce that claim for anyone who might need extra persuading:

A recent (2010) AACU survey of potential employers external link icon[PDF], "Raising the Bar: Employers' Views on College Learning in the Wake of the Economic Downturn," found that 65% of employers want colleges to place greater emphasis on the "ability to understand the global context of situations and decisions," and "global issues and developments and their implications for the future." At the same time, 57% of potential employers place a high value on their future employees' knowledge of "Cultural diversity in America and other countries." In the areas of civic responsibility and integrative learning, an authoritative 75% of employers would like to see more emphasis on "the ability to connect choices and actions to ethical decisions," 52% value "civic knowledge, civic participation, and community engagement" and, significantly, 79% want their future employees to possess "the ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-world settings through internships or other hands-on experiences." According to these data, the education provided by the WGS Program, with the strong emphasis we place on engaged learning, intercultural and civic awareness, and connecting theory with practice, is the wave of the future.
