MBI 111 Microorganisms and Human Disease

Evaluation

Your grade in this course will be determined by your performance on:

• Examinations - You will take three 125-point examinations consisting of 50 multiple-choice, matching multiple-choice, and true-false questions.
  • Questions will come from the textbook, from the study guide, from the PowerPoints, from the videos and articles (each article listed for a given section of the course will give rise to a question or part of a question), and from students' oral reports, as well as from my lectures.
  • Makeup Examinations - If you miss either the first or the second examination for a reason acceptable to me, you may take a makeup examination within one week.
• Reports - You will be expected to complete a 25-point report project that consists of a 2 page written report and a 2-5 minute oral report that you will present during class.
  • Written Report (15 points): To prepare for your discussion, each of you will write a 2 page report based on a recent news article that is at least 1000 words long (not including title or references).

  • Oral Report (10 points): On the assigned day, you will present a 2-5 minute oral report based on your written report

• Extra Credit - If you would like to improve your grade, you may write an extra credit report for up to 15-points
  • This report may be based on an infectious disease topic discussed in the third section of the course (diseases transmitted by oral, gastrointestinal or genitourinary infection)
  • Your extra credit report must be on a different type of disease than your assigned report (e.g. - if your assigned report date fell ona day we discussed a genitourinary disease, you must choose an article about an oral or gastrointestinal disease)
  • Rules for this report are the same as those for your other written report, including the 1000 word minimum for the article (or group of articles) on which your report is based.

  • Your extra credit report is due no later than 5:00 pm on Friday,December 4.
