Course Evaluation
Your course grade will be based on your performance on both
lecture and laboratory activities:
- The lecture portion of your grade (75%) will be
determined by your performance on four 70-point
examinations, two 35-point presentations and online
quizzes (25-points).
- Examinations will be a combination of approximately
30 multiple-choice, matching-multiple-choice, true-false questions, fill-in-the-blank
and short answer essay. If you miss any of the first three examinations
for a reason acceptable to the instructor, you may take a make-up examination
within one week after the date of the one you missed.
- Presentations are 10 minutes long. (Make sure that
you stick to the time!!) Everybody in the group must contribute to the
presentations. You must hand in a one-page summary a week before the presentation
(see schedule), which should be a summary of what you are planning to
present. The instructor will read it and let you know if something is
missing or should be presented differently. Based on that you should prepare
the presentation and send it to the instructor two days before the actual
presentation in the morning before 10:00 am (see schedule). The instructor
will check it and let you know, if it is OK or if things need to be changed.
Your group must come to the instructor's office hours in the afternoon
of that day to discuss the presentation. Very important: if you have any
questions: come by during office hours or send the instructor an email!!
- Online Quizzes are found on the textbook website. You
may take as many quizzes as you like, and you can accumulate a maximum
of 25 points.
- The laboratory portion of your course grade (25%) will be determined
by your performance on two laboratory examinations (30 points for the
first and 35 points for the second), two laboratory notebook assessments
(5 points for the first and 15 points for the second), two 10-point
laboratory reports, and five unannounced quizzes (10
points total). Although you are expected to participate in every
laboratory exercise, you will be allowed one excused absence. Each additional
absence will result in deduction of 10 points from your cumulative course
points.
- Extra credit opportunities are available ... as described
on the Extra
Credit web page.
Plagiarism and other infractions of Miami University rules and regulations will be dealt with as described
in the Miami
University Handbook (pay particular attention to Part
V Academic Misconduct and especially to SECTION 01.502).
